Do You Actually Need to Be on Social Media? A Small Business Reality Check
April 7, 2026 · 4 min read
A lot of small businesses maintain a social media presence out of guilt more than strategy — a feed that gets updated in bursts, goes quiet for months, and doesn't clearly bring in any business either way. It's worth asking honestly whether it should be there at all, rather than assuming every business needs to be posting.
When social media actually matters
It earns its keep when your actual customers are making decisions there — visually driven businesses (a renovation contractor showing before-and-afters, a salon showing work, a retailer showing product) get real value from a feed people browse before deciding. It also matters if referrals and word-of-mouth genuinely flow through a platform your customers already use daily.

When it's mostly wasted effort
If your business is more transactional and less visual — a B2B service, something people search for rather than discover by scrolling — a stagnant social profile isn't actively hurting you, but the time spent maintaining it might be better spent elsewhere. An abandoned, months-stale profile can actually look worse than having none at all, since it signals a business that's not currently active.
A more honest way to decide
Rather than defaulting to "we should probably be posting," ask where your actual customers are already making decisions — that's usually Google and your website first, and social media second, if it applies at all. If it does apply, consistency run on autopilot beats sporadic effort. Social media and ad management is available as an add-on if that's the direction that makes sense for your business — not something we push on businesses it wouldn't actually help.
