The Small Business Owner's Google Business Profile Checklist

Before spending money on a new site or automation, there's a free lever most small businesses haven't fully pulled: their Google Business Profile. It's what shows up when someone searches your business name, or searches "[what you do] near me" and Google surfaces the local map pack. A thin or outdated profile is invisible competitively, even if the actual business is great.

The checklist

  • Claim and verify the listing — sounds obvious, but a surprising number of Ontario small businesses have an unclaimed or unverified profile
  • Match your business name, address, and phone number exactly to what's on your website and other listings — inconsistency actively hurts local ranking
  • Pick the most specific category available, not just the broadest one that technically fits
  • Fill in hours, service area, and a real description — don't leave Google's auto-generated version in place
  • Add real photos — of the business, the work, the team — not stock images
  • Turn on messaging or a booking link if you can respond to it, since customers use it more than owners expect
  • Ask for reviews consistently, and actually reply to them — profiles with recent, responded-to reviews outperform static ones

Why this comes before everything else

A new website and AI automation both work better once people can actually find the business in the first place — Google Business Profile is usually the first thing a local customer sees, before they ever click through to a site. It's also the fastest thing to fix: most of this checklist takes an afternoon, not a project timeline.

Once the profile is in shape, reviews are the next lever worth automating — see our post on getting more Google reviews without being pushy about it.
